Let’s be honest – we don’t have time to waste, and although we want to have perfectly manicured nails all the time, sometimes, it feels like we just don’t have the time to sit and give our hands and nails the attention it needs. Well, that’s wrong! Here are three easy nail care shortcuts that show you that beautiful nails are always worth your time:

1. Quickly Dry Your Nail Polish

If you can’t sit still and wait for minutes and hours to pass while your three coats are drying, dunk your hands in a bowl of ice-cold water. Cold water freeze-dries polish, sealing and hardening it quickly. First, let your nails air-dry (for approximately two minutes), then submerge in ice-cold water for three minutes. Voila! Your polish will harden completely.

Another tip: In between coats, blast nails with cool air from a hair dryer to help each layer of color dry as you go.

2. A Perfect Manicure for An Event

3. Repair a Torn Nail

Don’t you hate it when your nail tears? It always seems to happen at the most inopportune time. An easy solution? Patch it with a tea bag. Cut a tiny piece of paper from a tea bag (it should be big enough to cover the entire tear), apply a drop of our Nailene nail glue to the paper (Ultra Precise #71233 is wonderful for this kind of thing!), then press it on top of the tear. Allow the glue to dry, then gently file the top of the paper so that it is smooth and flush with the nail. You can then apply polish on it like a regular (not-torn) nail.

We first spotted it in an article from the UK’s Daily Mail. Then we saw that Time Magazine also had the same thing to say. Nail Polish has risen 54% this year according to the NPD Group, and it is now replacing lipstick as women’s favorite recession-proof luxury.

As the economy declines, there is usually a soaring sales trend for high-end cosmetics (also known as the Lipstick Index). During down economic times, if women can only afford one limited luxury, a tube of lipstick is an inexpensive option compared with buying a fab new outfit or indulging in a spa day. But as the U.S. approaches a second economic dip, it appears that nail polish has now replaced lipstick as the most recession-proof cosmetic. Nails are a cheap thrill!

We’ve seen the trends, too. We can’t deny the fashion and beauty coverage on nail polish and nail art. Indeed, nails have never been more fashionable than right now!

Go Red
Burnt-orange/red or truly, madly, deeply red lips were the makeup artists’ color of choice all over the runways. Spotted at Ralph Lauren and Diane Von Furstenberg, one sure sign that it isn’t summer any longer is that you now have lips with color that pops.

Loose PonyTail
Both Dries Van Noten and Vera Wang’s shows had models sporting pony tails as the season’s hair style. A new twist: Have a ponytail with the base under itself. It takes the tried and true pony tail and gives it a new twist that shows it isn’t the same summer casual style.

Spider Lashes
Gucci, Versace, Lanvin and Valentino all had lashes that looked like spider legs! Draw some attention to your eyes and apply lots of black pigment to lashes to achieve a “cloggy” effect (clumps of lashes). It’s a dramatic look that says it’s time to take me seriously!

Smokey Eye/Metallics

A Bolder Brow
The menswear influence brought back the bolder brow look and it was all over the runways, including Alexander Wang, Prada and Kenzo. So, make sure you don’t over-pluck – it’s all about overly filled in arches to show you’re serious about Autumn.

With the Deluxe Salon Acrylic kit in hand, here’s a step-by-step guide to getting perfect acrylics:

Step 1: Prep your nails by first removing any previous nail polish.

Step 2: Next, sanitize your nails. Use an antibacterial hand wash like HandClens to clean your hands and fingernails thoroughly.

Step 3: Trim and shape your nails using a nail file. Take an orangewood and gently push back the cuticles. Take the nail buffer and gently remove the shine on the surface to help the adhesion. Remove the dust.

Step 4: Apply forms or tips to the nails.

Step 5: Sparingly apply nail primer to the nails. Do not touch the skin or cuticles. You need to apply only a single, even coat of nail primer. Once it dries well, it will appear sticky and you can now begin to apply acrylic nails.

Step 6: Now here’s the trickier (more coordinated) part of applying acrylic nails. Dip the brush in acrylic liquid (monomer) and then into the acrylic powder to form a ball. When you have an acrylic ball on the brush, take out the brush slowly.

Step 7: Place this ball on your nail’s base and carefully flatten it with the brush, spreading it all over the nail, moving the brush from the base towards the tip. Apply additional balls of acrylic where necessary.

Step 8: Now, shape and paint your nails as desired.

Easy, gorgeous nails by you and Nailene… and you can skip the cost of a salon visit!

How you look and feel on the outside is most often an indicator of what’s going on inside.  If you’ve been frustrated with owning thin, brittle nails, and are looking to have strong, healthy nails, the first thing you may want to do is look at (and possibly, change) your diet.

Healthy nails are indicative of how your nutritional choices are affecting your general health.  If you have weak nails that crack or break easily, have white spots or strong ridges, these can all indicate that you’re lacking the right kinds of nutrients.  Here are a few solutions, if:

My nails are brittle. If this is your biggest complaint, your body may be craving for iron. Increase your intake of iron-rich foods like eggs, whole grain breads and cereals, liver, raisins, pumpkin seeds, avocados, molasses, and green leafy vegetables like kale.

My nails continuously crack or break. This is an indication that you are lacking protein.  Obviously meat and cheese are the most traditional protein sources, but if you’re a vegetarian, beans and legumes are also rich in protein.  Easily broken nails can also be a sign of a calcium deficiency.  Calcium-rich foods include all dairy foods, especially yogurt, dark green leafy vegetables, almonds, beans, and sardines.

I can’t grow my nails. For brittle or poor growing nails, eggs are a good source of sulfur-containing amino acids, which are excellent for providing nail growth.

I have white spots under my nails. If you have white spots under your nails, eat foods with vitamin B and zinc.  You can get B-vitamin nourishment from organ meats, like liver and kidneys, as well as fish, yogurt, cheese, yogurt, milk, mushrooms, chickpeas, avocados, bananas, nuts, seeds, and whole grains.  Sources of zinc include beef, lamb, pork, crabmeat, turkey, chicken, lobster, clams and salmon.  Dairy products such as milk, cheese and yogurt also have zinc.

It’s also good to eat foods rich in Vitamin C, a powerful antioxidant that can help slow down the aging process and helps form and maintain collagen. Great sources include red peppers, broccoli, dark greens, citrus fruit, kiwis, and strawberries.
