How to Perfectly Apply Acrylics

As many of you know, Nailene is the expert when it comes to at-home acrylic systems. If you are an acrylic user or hoping to be one, Nailene has a collection of acrylics systems products that will help you get perfect-looking salon nails in no time. To ensure you have all the proper tools and products, our Deluxe Salon Acrylic Kit (#77197) is the complete professional kit for multiple acrylic nails and fills. It’s easy to do this salon process easily and conveniently from your own home at a price you can afford. This kit contains all the necessary components, all housed in a handy case.

With the Deluxe Salon Acrylic kit in hand, here’s a step-by-step guide to getting perfect acrylics:

Step 1: Prep your nails by first removing any previous nail polish.

Step 2: Next, sanitize your nails. Use an antibacterial hand wash like HandClens to clean your hands and fingernails thoroughly.

Step 3: Trim and shape your nails using a nail file. Take an orangewood and gently push back the cuticles. Take the nail buffer and gently remove the shine on the surface to help the adhesion. Remove the dust.

Step 4: Apply forms or tips to the nails.

Step 5: Sparingly apply nail primer to the nails. Do not touch the skin or cuticles. You need to apply only a single, even coat of nail primer. Once it dries well, it will appear sticky and you can now begin to apply acrylic nails.

Step 6: Now here’s the trickier (more coordinated) part of applying acrylic nails. Dip the brush in acrylic liquid (monomer) and then into the acrylic powder to form a ball. When you have an acrylic ball on the brush, take out the brush slowly.

Step 7: Place this ball on your nail’s base and carefully flatten it with the brush, spreading it all over the nail, moving the brush from the base towards the tip. Apply additional balls of acrylic where necessary.

Step 8: Now, shape and paint your nails as desired.

Easy, gorgeous nails by you and Nailene… and you can skip the cost of a salon visit!

Help…I had my nails done for the first time and desided that I an artist could in fact do my own filler. I did it looked great…I buffed the nail, then applied the primer. Now it seems that the nail where i added the filler is popping up :(
I know I’m ot a professional at this but I am disappointed in me now being able to do this. Any advice would be great thanks.

Acrylics are difficult to apply, even if you’re pretty adept so don’t worry! Next time, when applying a fill to acrylic nails it is important that the existing acrylic is buffed down so there is no ledge or lifting. Clean with polish remover and push cuticles back. Wash your hands and nails thoroughly. When applying the fill, be careful not to get on skin, as this will cause lifting. Hope this helps!

  4. Keisha Allen says:

I buy the nailene kit twice now but i seems to be doing something wrong cause the acrylic lifts up

    • Nailene says:

      Hi Keisha!

We’re sorry your acrylics keep lifting. Here are some reasons why they could be doing that:

      1. Insufficient nail prep – make sure your nail is properly prepped before applying your acrylic nails – use the nail primer and buff your nails to “roughen” them up.
      2. Need more or less glue – you may need to apply extra glue to the edges of your nails. Or alternatively, make sure you don’t use too much glue that the nail doesn’t adhere properly.
      3. The natural oils from your nailbeds are keeping the glue from holding. It’s important to make sure you don’t have any moisturizer/lotion or natural oils on your nail so apply acetone or nail polish remover before you even begin to have a clean slate.

      Hope this helps!

      Thanks!

Hello. im using this Nailene Acrylic fill kit for the first time so my question is
do i NEED to use nail primer? is it a must?

    • Nailene says:

      Hi Joann!

It’s hard to say whether using a nail primer is a must, but it is highly recommended. When you prime your nails, you put them in the most optimum condition (remove any oils, residue, etc. that could interfere with the acrylic process). Once your nails are primed, acrylics will be easier to apply because adhesion of the acrylic powder and liquid will be much better.

      Hope that helps!

  6. Vanessa says:

When I apply my primer it’s study even after five minutes of drying, should the primer be sticky??

    • Nailene says:

      Hi Vanessa!

It shouldn’t be sticky after you apply. A primer’s main purpose is to prime your nails before you even begin the acrylic process so it essentially wipes away any non-essential oils from your nails so that it is perfectly primed and the acrylic process will adhere better. We recommend you wash your hands with soap and water first, and don’t apply moisturizer. After that, apply the primer. Hope that helps!

      Thanks!

  7. Amanda Jones says:

Hello. I applied my nails yesterday, (very please with the results), and I am just curious.. How long is it safe to keep these on for?

    • Nailene says:

      Hi Amanda!

That’s great! Acrylic nails aren’t likely to harm your natural nails. It’s important to be cautious when using acrylic nails, however, because if a gap develops between the acrylic nail and the natural nail, it could lead to a moist, warm environment and then prone to a nail infection. Acrylics usually last about two weeks, and then your natural nail will start showing underneath (and you’ll probably have to do a fill) so that your nails look beautiful again.

      Hope that helps!

hi I was looking to purchase I am just wondering the drill they use to make the nail thin that is not included – so would I need to purchase it separately and is it extremely difficult to teach yourself ? and how long of a supply is given when purchached

    • Nailene says:

      Hi Stacia,

Unfortunately, we don’t offer the components separately in our Nailene mani/pedi kit #71310 so you’ll have to buy the entire kit to get the drill. It’s worth it though, because you will have all your necessary materials/formulas for beautiful nails. It is not difficult to teach yourself. We don’t have a time frame for how long the kit lasts. It varies with each person and how they use it.

  10. Lorna Schultz says:

I have my acrylics done at a salon, but maybe like to start doing them myself at home, but at the salon they use rotary tools to prep my nails for the fills and to smooth them after applying the new acrylic. Are rotary tools necessary when doing nails at home?

    • Nailene says:

      Hi Lorna,

Yes, you should absolutely prep your nails before doing acrylics. But, you don’t need fancy rotary tools to accomplish that. Instead, you can use a buffer block (make sure it is a soft grit) to smooth down your nail surface. Prep with acetone and your nails should be ready.

      Hope that helps.

I have a big consern.?:/ what is prep and
When do u apply because im bearly starting and idk what is the
liquid that u apply that spreads out by just one drop on all off them????
    Helpppppp!!!

    • Nailene says:

      Hi Yemile,
Prep means prepping your nails before you apply acrylics. That means using an acetone remover to remove any oils, lotions, etc. from your nails so that they’re primed to have the best application. It’s the first thing you do before you even begin applying acrylics. The liquid is the acrylic liquid that you mix with the acrylic powder. When you mix the two of them, it will create a ball. You’ll want to only put just that one drop on your nails (a little goes a long way), and then spread it out on your nail.

      Hope this helps!
